Asda Shows Early Signs of Stabilisation as Availability and Sales Trend Improve

Asda’s latest update suggests its turnaround is starting to gain some traction - even if the road ahead remains challenging.

The retailer reported a like-for-like sales decline of 0.8% in Q1, a significant improvement from the 4.2% drop seen in Q4. Management pointed to improved product availability, stronger operational execution and greater stability following the disruption caused by its major IT transition programme last year. According to The Grocer, availability remained above 95% throughout the quarter, which Asda described as its highest level in eight years.

For many in FMCG, that availability metric may be one of the most important signals in the update. Shelf availability remains one of the clearest indicators of operational health, and recovering it is often the first step towards rebuilding shopper trust, improving conversion and regaining lost volume.

The business is also continuing to invest heavily in price as it looks to strengthen its position against Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Lidl. While market share pressures remain, the improvement in sales performance suggests some early signs that these investments are beginning to stabilise the business.

Perhaps the most strategically significant announcement was Asda’s new partnership with Ocado. The deal will see Ocado overhaul Asda’s ecommerce infrastructure from 2027, giving the retailer access to upgraded technology across online ordering, fulfilment and delivery operations. In an increasingly competitive online grocery market, this feels like a long-term play designed to strengthen customer experience and operational efficiency.

The broader takeaway for suppliers, retailers and industry observers is that operational fundamentals still matter. Availability, pricing, systems stability and digital capability remain at the heart of grocery performance. Asda is not back to growth yet, but the latest figures suggest the business may be moving from recovery mode towards rebuilding momentum.
