Agua de Madre: Putting Fermentation at the Heart of the Drinks Category

The drinks category continues to evolve as consumers look for more than just refreshment from what they buy. From functional beverages to gut health and alcohol alternatives, there is growing interest in products that offer something different from traditional soft drinks. One brand tapping into several of these trends is Agua de Madre, a London-born drinks business putting fermentation at the heart of its range.

At the centre of the portfolio is its water kefir – a naturally fermented, sparkling drink containing billions of live cultures. Available in flavours including Lemon & Ginger, Blood Orange, Pink Grapefruit & Lime and Raspberry & Passion Fruit, the range offers a colourful alternative to conventional fizzy drinks. The products are also vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free and caffeine-free, with no artificial sweeteners, positioning them firmly within the better-for-you drinks space.

But Agua de Madre's offering goes beyond kefir. Its Remedio Infusion combines whole crushed fruits with water kefir grains to create a fermented, concentrated product available in flavours including Blackcurrant & Ginger, Turmeric & Ginger and Lemon & Ginger. Designed to be diluted into hot or cold drinks, stirred into yoghurt, added to dressings or even used in cooking, Remedio is a particularly versatile addition to the range.

The brand also offers Culture Shots, providing another way for consumers to incorporate fermented products into their routines. Together, the portfolio reflects Agua de Madre's focus on fermentation and gut health, while giving consumers different formats depending on how they want to enjoy the products. It is an interesting example of how a single ingredient or production method can be developed across multiple occasions rather than being limited to one traditional drink format.

There is a strong purpose behind the brand, too. Agua de Madre is female-founded and has committed to donating 1% of its profits to women-focused charities, meaning its growth is designed to contribute to causes beyond the business itself. In May 2025, its parent company, Flor de Madre Ltd, also became B Corp certified, achieving an impressive B Impact Score of 99.1 compared with a current median score of 50.9 for ordinary businesses.

With consumers continuing to explore gut health, functional beverages and alternatives to traditional soft drinks, Agua de Madre is operating in some particularly interesting areas of FMCG. Its combination of fermentation, distinctive flavours and multiple product formats gives the brand plenty of opportunities to appeal to different occasions and consumers. Whether you're looking for a sparkling alternative to soda, a fermented addition to your daily routine or simply something new to try, Agua de Madre is certainly a brand worth keeping an eye on.
